Artichoke Light - Design Classic

Artichoke LightThe artichoke light is probably one of the most recognisable ceiling light designs in the world; it really is a true design icon. Created by famous Danish author, architect, designer and all round intellectual Poul Henningsen, the artichoke light uses a complex system of aluminium leaves to reflect light from a central bulb, which cannot be directly viewed.

Artichoke lights therefore emit the optimum amount of light whilst concealing the ugly central light source and, in a further design twist, are suspended from the ceiling by steel suspension wires, giving the impression that the light floats just below the ceiling.

Poul Henningsen and the Artichoke Light

Born in 1894, Poul Henningsen was one of Denmark’s most influential cultural figures. An author, architect, critic and designer, Henningsen was one of the chief proponents of the functionalism movement in European architecture; Functionalism is the idea that an architect should design a building to mirror its purpose. Henningsen was also an outspoken writer who believed in natural behaviour, sexual broad-mindedness and simple living.

However, in design circles Henningsen is most famous for the groundbreaking artichoke light, the first example of which was the PH-lamp. The PH-lamp was the first ceiling light in which Henningsen explored his idea of light using highly polished metal surfaces to reflect light from a central source, and proved to be a huge commercial success, funding much of his later work.
