GEORGE CARWARDINE LIGHTS

GEORGE CARWARDINE LIGHTS

George Carwardine wasn't initially a lighting designer. Born in England in 1887, he grew up to be an automotive engineer by trade, working as a freelance design consultant developing new concepts for vehicle suspension. It was during his time of freelancing that he created a mechanism he recognised could work in other fields – specifically lighting. This sparked the creation of the iconic ‘Angle’ in 1930 - a desk lamp with flexible repositioning that acted in the same way as the human muscle. The Angle lamp was an innovative lighting solution that was based on the constant-tension principle of human limbs. By balancing a weight against a spring through a linking mechanism, Carwardine was able to ensure that the light remained highly stable and could hold any position over 3 planes. This construction not only made the lampshade adjustable but also enabled users to position the entire lamp in different ways, depending on what source of light was needed. The fluid motion of the Iconic Lights design is also created by modern precision engineering, paying tribute to Carwardine’s original design.
