2020 Trends: Humble Materials

Many fashion trends for 2020 have a focus on all things sustainable, green and eco-friendly. And whilst this Humble Materials direction places a lot of emphasis on clean, natural materials that give a sense of honest home comforts, this isn't just a trend for the eco-warriors amongst us. Humble Materials has a colour palette of natural pigments with layers of comforting textures, this trend is perfect for cosy winter months and yet is light enough to see you through into spring. It is a trend where you can be a bit messy and rough around the edges. It is for homes that embrace a warm and live-in feel. Here's how to get started. Wood is Where it’s at   One of the first things you’re likely to notice when researching the humble materials trend is a prevalence of wood. Wood panelled walls, wooden floorboards and furniture are all key features of the trend. It’s also worth noting that much of the wood we are seeing hasn’t been overworked and just as with reclaimed wood it has a distressed look about it.The Great Insulator - Cork   Cork has been making a name for itself in the home décor world for some time, but now, with the humble materials trend, it’s corks time to shine. It didn’t take cork producers long to figure out that as less and less cork was being used in the wine industry, they needed to diversify their clientele. Cork looks beautiful, but it also has excellent insulation properties – perfect for the building and interior design sectors. Cork tiles look great on walls and on the floor and as cork is totally natural, it’s a humble material.Decoration The colour palette to choose for this trend is organic, rooted in natural hues that evoke a humble lifestyle deeply embedded in nature. Cool blues and greys are the bedrock of this paired-back look, with colour coming from warm pinks and browns topped with faded teals and mossy greens. The finish is rough and textured, painting over concrete walls or over imperfect plastering. Exposed wooden floorboards or concrete floors are the perfect pairings for your Humble Materials colour palette. Lighting is a very easy way to bring a trend seamlessly into your home.
