2020 trends : Japandi

The Japandi trend was love at first sight for us. The rich accent colours, natural materials and elements of our favourite style – scandi. If you’re looking for the next big trend or a way to update your scandi living room, then stop looking. This new trend has the potential to dominate rooms for 2020 and 2021. You may be thinking that these two trends couldn’t be further apart but, it’s the love of minimalism, clean lines and admiration natural materials and practical statement pieces that makes these two trends a match made in interior heaven.

The way to nail this trend with colour is to keep the cool greys and neutrals that go hand in hand with scandi trend and add an element (or elements!) of Japanese design by using rich accent colours such as burnt red, teal and emerald green. If you’re just looking for a quick and easy update then you can do this by painting a feature wall in a deep red or rust colour, you could introduce emerald green using cushion covers or accessories (read on for more of that). Alternatively, if you’re looking to fully embrace the Japandi trend then we suggest sourcing a burnt red velvet sofa and pairing this with a textured feature wall in the same shade. Keep the scandi element of this trend by styling a Berber-style rug in front of the sofa.

Accessories and decorative items are the perfect way to give a nod to Scandinavian or Japanese design. Add elements of either by choosing accessories made from wood and ceramics painted in a gloss red. For items such as mirrors, a blame frame will make a statement and bring everything together.

When it comes to art, we can think of nothing better than pairing a perfectly hygge line drawing next to a painting of graceful birds. This perfect pairing of the two styles is the best nod to the simplicity and craftsmanship of each trend – and is the simplest way to update any scandi living room.

Our favourite topic. Lighting is an easy way to add an element of either trend to any room. Considering wood as a primary material, our Tapered Wood Veneer Pendant Shade and Chianti Wicker Pendant Shade in Natural are perfect to introduce aspects of wood. Opt for the grey Chianti Wicker Pendant Shade to keep the scandi feel. When looking for floor and table lamps, consider the valued minimalism and clean lines of these two trends. Our Columbus Floor Lamp in Black is the perfect minimalist, statement floor lamp to add drama and cool. Thinking about the importance of wood in these two trends, our Augustus Light Wood Tripod Floor Lamp range is perfect. Pair this with a white tapered shade to keep it neutral and scandi.

We’ve already mentioned wood, and this is without a doubt the material that these two trends share the most. We are in love with the furniture made from woven materials which perfectly optimises the Japandi trend. Other than wood, we recommend silk textures and wool to interpret this trend perfectly.

After mentioning woven cabinets, we went down a furniture rabbit hole and started dreaming about perfectly designed wooden coffee tables with legs that criss-cross in the centre, minimalist and practical dining chairs and statement rust sofas with indigo velvet cushions. We could go on forever but, what we’ve discovered is that this perfect blend of east meets west, the idea of turning your home into a sanctuary of calm, is right up our street.
