2020 Trends: Nordic

The Nordic trend is one that has been with us for years and is ever evolving. Take the Structured Simplicity trend which grew from the scandi trend. We are in love with all things scandi, it’s the perfect effortless trend to make any room feel homely and well designed.  It’s understated nature and use of natural materials and colours makes guests feel safe and cosy. For 2020, the Nordic trend looks to create a sanctuary by adding more texture and using neutral colours. For a 2020 colour shake up, think faux sheepskin, wool and earthenware. For colours we love Stony Ground, Slipper Satin and Light Grey by Farrow and Ball.

Dining Room

Choosing the Nordic trend for your dining room is perfect as it will make guests feel welcomed and at home. When designing a dining room, we like to centre the planning around the table and chairs. They should be the focal point of the room and the pieces that tie everything together. For the dining table, ash or birch wood are perfect and are ideal for the Nordic trend. When it comes to seating, we’re a big fan of benches. Not only do they mean that you aren’t limited to four spaces, but they look aesthetically pleasing. Our favourite looks are ones with a bench on one side and two or three chairs on another. For the Nordic trend, we love wishbone or rattan chairs. A round jute rug under the table is the perfect way to make a dining room feel warm and welcoming. When it comes to the walls, we love simple statement artwork such as an extra-large line drawing or a moody seascape. Hanging wicker bowls on the wall is the perfect way to make a feature in keeping with the Nordic trend. For paint, keep walls neutral. Our favourites are Gooseberry Fool 2 by Dulux and School House White by Farrow and Ball.

Living room

A Nordic living room is, as far as we’re concerned, the stuff of dreams. It’s the perfect place to let your decorative imagination run wild with walls, furniture, art and accessories. As with the dining room, we like to centre our mood boards for the living room around the focal point. Unsurprisingly for the living room, this is the sofa. For a Nordic living room, the perfect choice is a deep and soft white sofa that is easy to fall into and hard to leave. If a white sofa is a little too daunting for you (we know sticky finger and puppy hair don’t always make the perfect match with white sofas) then a tan faux leather sofa might be the way to go. It's the perfect way to add extra texture and depth to the room. A huge Berber rug in the middle of the room is perfectly Nordic and is a great way to make your living room feel cosy and inviting. For a coffee table, we love anything with black legs, the top can be wood, white or black, whatever takes your fancy. Coffee tables could be our favourite thing to style. Our favourite look is a short stack of coffee table books on one side and a decorative tray of candles or a vase displaying pussy willow on the other. Finally, for cushions opt for muted tones and patterns in your colour palette. Cushions are the perfect way to introduce a variety of textures which is the perfect way to nail this trend.

Bedroom

A bedroom has to feel tranquil and relaxing; it must be somewhere that you can’t wait to get back to and rarely want to leave. That is why the Nordic look for a bedroom. Feature walls for 2020 are out, try painting two adjoining walls in your feature colour. Wooden floors are perfect for a bedroom, they are warm and welcoming and stand the test of time both in terms of durability and style. Pair a wooden floor with a woven jute rug for the perfect Nordic look. The perfect kind of bed is an unmade bed and so, simple is better. Choose bedding in neutral colours such and beige and white with darker shades for accent pillows. Finally, for artwork we love simple, geometric shapes painted in your colour palette.
