2020 Trends: Structured Simplicity

If you’re anything like us, you would have been lusting over Instagram accounts such as @home.style.interior, @thehousepotnoodlesbuilt and @hellohaus for all of 2019. The perfect beige walls, panelling and clean lines are just beautiful and bang on trend for 2020. The new neutrals of the structured simplicity trend have left us feeling all warm and cosy inside. They create a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for curling up with a great book and a cup of tea (milk, two sugars, please). We always like to start our room transformations with a colour palette, a physical mood board and, of course, Pinterest.

Farrow and Ball have the most beautiful range of new neutrals that perfectly nail the structured simplicity trend. We love Stoney Ground teamed with Wimborne White, closely followed by Slipper Satin and Pointing.

STYLE TIP: Elle Décor declared that, for 2020, the one wall feature wall was out. Try painting two joining walls in one colour and the other two in the lighter colour. Or take a leaf out of Tanya’s book and bring down the ceiling colour to lowered picture rails.

Structured Simplicity doesn’t have to begin and end with beige. Ideal Home recommends pairing this trend with a dark accent colour such as Dulux’s ‘Storm Day’. This adds and element of depth and quenches that thirst for dark interiors without clashing with your new love of beige.

When it comes to art with this trend, simplicity is key. Think line drawing and oil paintings or photographs of the sea with masses of sky. When choosing art, it’s always good to chose pieces that make your heart sing, and nothing could be truer with this trend. Structured Simplicity is all about feeling good, feeling cosy so chose pieces that make you feel good.

Cotton, cane webbing, wicker and wood are going to be your best friends here. Remember the key word – simple. Chose humble materials that are natural and fit in your colour palette. Imagine a wool blanket in a shade slightly darker than your darkest wall draped over the side if the sofa, just calling to you to climb under. Or a cane webbing accent chair finished with dark stained wood – dreamy.

A little goes a long way with this trend. Go for carefully selected accessories that speak to you, remind you of somewhere or something. A framed black and white photo of that wind-swept day at the beach or a white vase that holds some pampas grass you picked on a head-clearing country walk. When choosing décor accessories remember your colour palette. Accessories can make or break a room, if you really love something but it’s the wrong colour, make it yourself or paint it. Suddenly you’ve turned something you love into something that is fundamentally you.

You guessed it – keep lighting… simple, we love statement, design led pieces that make the room but don’t take all the attention. Our Satellite range is perfect for this, available in copper and chrome, this range of ceiling lights are perfect for both cooler and warmer versions of this trend.

Gold, brass and black are a match made in heaven for the structured simplicity trend. Our Ambrose Wall Lights are the perfect nod to the industrial trend. We can definitely imagine in the alcoves of a living room, lighting up a bookcase with the spines of the books turned in or some perfectly styled shelves.

When it comes to table lamps, we don’t think there’s a more perfect match for this trend than our Farrah Square Table Lamp. It makes the perfect statement without taking all the attention and the size is perfect for placing on any shelf or side table. The brass and marble together are simply divine.

We don’t think there is a more perfect floor lamp to match this 2020 trend then the Flexi neck Floor Lamp. The shade of brass on this floor lamp perfectly matches the shades of beige mentioned earlier. Did we mention this floor lamp was seen in Vogue in December 2019?
