Interviewing the people behind the most colourful homes on Instagram!

Making bold colour choices in your home can be daunting, and for this reason we can often avoid them completely, instead opting for a more neutral colour palette. However, adding colour into your home has many benefits. Firstly, colours give off positive energy, boosting happiness, hope and creativity! Secondly, having the confidence to play with different colours in your home is a great way to illustrate your personality. Plus, colourful walls, lighting and accessories is a great conversation starter when you have guests over!

We virtually interviewed two fabulous influencers who definitely do not shy away from using colour in their homes! From where they get their colourful inspiration, to how they make a house a home, we covered it all!

Without further ado, meet Richard O’Gorman, who runs the fabulous Instagram account @househomo. His vibrant and playful personality is most definitely illustrated throughout his home.

Q: Where do you get your home style inspiration from?

“A lot of the inspiration comes from art; before Corona I was at a different art gallery every weekend taking in ideas and colour palettes, but since lockdown I’ve been watching a lot of vintage movies, like ‘What a way to go’.. (the fashion is EVERYTHING); and ‘The Big Lebowski’, and allowing inspiration to come that way!”

“I try and stay off Instagram when getting ideas because it’s so easy to become overwhelmed with everything that’s out there, and I don’t want the house to feel too trend-led, but the occasional sneak peek on the gram doesn’t hurt!”

Q: What is your favourite room in the house and why?

“Oh now, that is a tricky one! I love each room for such different reasons, but I’d probably say the bathroom is my favourite; is the craziest and most colourful, so definitely the most me!”

Q: What makes a house a home?

“Actually, for me it’s what makes a house a homo!! But it must be bursting with personality. I know there is a big trend for neutral and grey walls at the moment, but it just doesn’t feel fun to me; we’re spending so much time at home right now, and I think everyone should be more playful!”

“Also, stories: my home is full of little trinkets from travels, and pieces of art with a story behind them, and I think that’s what really makes a home!”

Q: If you had to describe your home style in three words, what would they be?

“Playful, Irreverent & Happy”

Q: Where do you get your confidence from with your bold colour choices?

“I guess I have always dressed quite colourfully, so I’ve never been afraid of mixing colours. The house was a sea of beige and magnolia when I moved in, and I just had a vision of it bursting with colour, so I just ran with that! Let me tell you, once you start with the bold colour choices, you just can’t stop!”

Q: Have you always had daring interior style, or did it build over time?

“My last house was a converted stable with lots of exposed brick. There wasn’t really an opportunity to be daring with paint, so I went wild with accessories instead. So, I think it’s just blossomed from that point…and it will never stop!”

“… Actually, the first room I decorated was the dining room. I was painting it orange and blue, and my family were like, ooh Rich that’s a bit daring. And now look at me! It’s definitely evolved so much over the last 9 months. so who knows where it will be this time next year!”

Next up, we spoke to Tom Bax, who knows how to do maximalism best! If you’re trying to achieve maximalism in your home, there is no one better to take inspiration from than Tom Bax, who runs the Instagram account @themellowmaximalist. From abstract sculptures to unique patterns and textures, this home certainly tells a story with its eclectic character!

Q: Where do you get your home style inspiration from?

“This is always such a hard question for me to answer funnily enough, because its forever changing, adding and evolving. At the moment, I am really inspired by a tableware designer called Mrs Alice. Her Instagram handle is @mrsaliceshop. Everything she does is super over the top, but also completely elegant. When I first moved into the apartment, it was such a blank canvas, so I really relied on a lot of interior books to help me get an idea of what kind of vibe I wanted. A book called ‘MAXIMALISM’ by Sig Bergamin was like my bible, the way he puts together colours, patterns and textures… it’s something special, I highly recommend it”

Q: What is your favourite room in the house and why?

“These changes whenever I buy something new for a room! I then become re-infatuated with the space. But, overall, I would say it’s the bedroom. The room is so unique architecturally, it has eight huge arched windows, two on every wall. We are also lucky enough to have a dressing room, so no clothes or wardrobes are in there, which really gives you a hotel feeling which I love. Also, bedrooms are so easy to change up with new bedding and cushions- making it easier to play around with a lot of colour”

Q: What makes a house a home?

“I think for me it’s definitely somewhere that feels totally you. My home is such an extension of my personality, and filling it with everything that I love makes it such a happy home for me”

Q: If you had to describe your home style in three words, what would they be?

“Fun, Classic and Eclectic”

Q: Where do you get your confidence from with your bold colour choices?

“I don’t think I was quite aware of how bold I was until recently. I feel my confidence has gained over time, and with the more I added. Now it’s more about how I can get another colour in, rather than will it work?”

Q: Have you always had daring interior style?

“I think I have always loved daring interiors, but this being my first home that I own, it really is the first time fully exploring my style and taste, which was limited when renting. I feel like now is the time to be a little mad, I have years to be refined and beige!”
