Embrace Your Garden | Using lighting to create a zonal space

Having a large garden is a luxury in itself, but that doesn’t mean those with smaller gardens cannot make the most of the small space they have. Making a garden look larger is not about creating a large open space; the best way to make a garden seem larger is to divide into individual spaces for different activities such as relaxing or growing. Creating these zones can be done by walling off the separate sections with hedges or plants. However, if you’re looking for a more understated sleek way to divide up your garden, you can use lighting to separate these sections instead. For example, you can make walking through your garden an adventure using decking lights or spike lights to help light the way and make the garden seem larger this creates an entirely new world, all in your back garden.

Everyone’s favorite place in the garden is the relaxing area, the zen zone, the place where you can just sit in the sun for hours on a nice day, or just relax with friends for an evening of BBQ and good times. Ambient lighting is the best way to create a relaxing atmosphere. The perfect outdoor lights to give that ambient glow would be string lights or fairy lights. You can use these as canopy lighting or as a barrier to creating a secluded area for those summer nights in the garden. These dainty lights will also add more of a magical feel to the area.

Should you use your garden for growing your own flowers, fruits, vegetables or herbs you would need a designated area for your growing. Any proud green thumb would love the idea of illuminating their plants. Placing lights over your plants is not the best idea as this space should be reserved for your plants to soak up all the sunlight they can get. As such the best way to add a little light to your growing space is with spike lights. These little dazzlers stick in the ground and can be tilted to make sure you highlight all your achievements

You can’t turn your garden into a magical space without space for the little ones to let their imaginations run wild. Whilst this is probably best left for an open space, such as on the decking, why not use decking lights to create their own little entertainment area? RGB decking lights can change colour at the press of a button these can be used for both ambient lighting when the children are away and as a tool to help their imagination when their creating their own worlds.

Once you’ve created your perfect zonal garden you may be thinking about illuminating the entire area. Of course, the first impression of your garden starts as you enter. Why not opt for some lantern style wall lights to start off your garden adventure. These add some ambient lighting to the entire garden when you choose.
