house number one

Mackayla’s 1930’s semi detached home is every aspiring renovator’s dream. Mackayla couldn’t wait to get stuck into the renovation. Two days after getting the keys in the summer of 2018, she was ripping up carpets and sanding floorboards in the living room. Mackayla wanted to create a sanctuary that she could hide in before moving on to the bigger renovation. Seven months after the move in date, the rear extension started which involved adding four metres onto the back of the house. The result is a light and spacious family living area with enough features to make a statement.

My name’s Mackayla Colwell and I run the Instagram account for @housenumberone_1930s.
My job is a project manager. I own my own project management consultancy called Hive Project; I mainly work in construction. I have two kids and a pet ferret called Yogi. This is my first renovation project, I have owned houses before, but it’s mainly been decorating so this is the first time we’ve done any real construction work.

interior style

My interior style I think is quite eclectic; I don’t think I’ve got a particular style. I’m just one of those people who trolls the magazines, people Instagram’s and Pinterest’s to see what they like and then try and throw it all together and see if it works.

first moved in

My home, when I first moved in, was lived in by an older gentleman. It hadn’t been decorated for some time, so it was very unloved. The kitchen looked like a sauna; it was all wooden panelled. The guy liked to paint so he painted every door in the house a different colour.

I think to start off a renovation you really need to know what you want. It’s an expensive mistake to make if you change your mind halfway through a renovation project, especially if you’re doing an extension. Do your research, make sure you know exactly what you want, what your style is and look at all the inspiration out there before you even look at drawings or anything like that.

living room

We renovated the living room first. The whole house needed refurbishing so we wanted somewhere that we could retreat to away from all the mess. We put quite a lot of effort into getting this room decorated within a couple of months of moving in. It was probably the one that needed the least work to it as well; it needed a new fireplace, needed plastering, we stripped the floorboards, but it was nothing major that we needed to do in here. This kind of became our little hideaway for the next year.

favourite room

My favourite room in the house is probably the kitchen, because it’s so light and you can get all the family round the table. We can use the whole space, we have parties in there, big dinners, but we’ve also just done the bathroom as well so that’s a close second.

To renovate the kitchen we had to put another four metres onto the back of the house. It was a five-month construction project, which involved having a make-shift kitchen in our hall with a microwave on a decorating table and not being able to cook for a long time. It was horrendous, but it was worth it in the end because we’ve got a huge space now that we can have a really good family life in.

living room
renovation

The living room renovation was part of the kitchen extension. We extended the original kitchen into the back garden to make it work as one space. The only bad thing about this room is that it is quite dark, there are no windows because it connects to the extension there. We had to do all the plastering, put new floors down, painting, everything you could think needed doing was done in this room. The only thing that’s left to do though is to put in a nice log burner.

best diy

My proudest DIY moment is really sad; it involves doing a really small bit of tiling on my fireplace. There’s only about 6 tiles, but I was so chuffed with myself when I managed to do it myself.

renovation tip

My biggest renovation advice to anybody is to get loads of quotes from any trades that you’re getting building work off. Especially if you’re doing something big like an extension, get at least 3 quotes and then you can check that you’re getting value for money.

If you’re anything like me with interior design, you probably just look at everything on Instagram and you like what you see but you’re not sure if it goes together. So one of my biggest tips for interiors is to get yourself a mood board. You don’t have to do that physically, you can just do it on a PowerPoint where you cut out all the things you like and stick them on one piece of paper. Then you can see if they go together. That’s how I do it anyway because I’m not a professional.
