At home with: House.On.The.Hill

We fell in love with Hannah's feed the second we saw it and we just knew we had to do something with her. The drive to her house for the photoshoot took us through the beautiful peak district but what was waiting for us at the other end was even better. Hannah's little two bed home nestled between the edge of the peak district and the city of Sheffield is just perfect, with views of the rolling hills below, a village pub and post office, it really is as picture esque as it sounds. Hannah bought her home as a renovation project and the entire process can be see on the highlights of her Instagram feed and trust me, it is well worth the watch. 

We asked the lovely and hilarious Hannah some questions about her home to give you some inspiration...

 

1. My favourite part of our home has to be the lounge, snuggled up on our big leather couch, in front of the log burner taking in the views through the floor to ceiling window we installed during our recent renovations. The colours and use of raw materials in this room work so well together to create a calm and relaxing vibe.

 

2. Our home ... it’s an absolute mish mash of so many things. My true passion is salvage hunting and rummaging around reclamation yards. If I ever get a baby-free few hours, you’re most likely to find me at our local reclamation yard. I love owning things that I know no one else will have, I love my home to be unique and hope my photos and my styling reflects this. Being Northern I love a bargain :) and with salvage, a lot of the time, I accomplish both of these things in one! 

 

All that being said I love Nordic and scandi styling; minimal, calming and cosy or “hygge”. So many friends/family who visit our home say it’s got a very calming vibe, which tells me I achieved what I set out to when we started our complete renovation on the property 10 months ago. 

 

There are a fair few industrial influences scattered around our home from lighting to the old gun locker in our bedroom repurposed into a wardrobe. I feel rough unfinished or rusted metal edges add character amongst the calm, neutral colour scheme.

 

3. Our living room is a relaxed nordic vibe. With restored original floorboards, stone slab hearth, Yorkshire made log burner and Farrow & Balls "Elephant Grey" on the walls. I can have the most hectic of days and retreat here to find calm. Whilst it definitely holds a strong industrial influence, the combination of old vs new, and the odd splash of bold colour, it's perfectly balanced.

 

4. For me, a like to live minimally. Well, as minimally as you can with an almost 2 year old who loves alllll of the plastic crap.

 

Since moving into our little House On The Hill I have massively overhauled my views on how much "stuff" we actually need. It's a small two bed terrace and I like a sense of space (tricky). Obviously items that hold memories, have sentimental value stay, no questions asked. But during my crazed decluttering I took the approach that things had to tick one of two boxes to make the cut; either bring me joy to look at OR be used, regularly. If they didn't apply to either of these catagories they went. I found local selling groups on Facebook super useful for helping me clear out, and make a few pennies in the process. Now I'm finding our house is full of things we really love, hold great memories, or are generally just useful and a necessity. Our house feels minimal but homely, that to me makes our house our home.

 

5. I take inspiration from so many places, Instagram (obvs), pinterest, home mags ... the usual. Where I really get a buzz is looking at old battered items that are no longer loved and turning them into something glorious. The metal cabinet in our living room for example, was left at the side of the road in London, unloved, rusty and abandoned. I persuaded my friend to wheel it back to the car with me, load it up, and after a quick sand and a bit of rust treatment it is a beauty !! So I guess I'm trying to say that I take inspiration from pretty much everywhere, not always the most obvious of places, but that's the fun bit :)

 

6. My favourite Iconic Lights products ... We have the Dobbin Electric Pendant in Wood and Cement and I just LOVE it! Simple yet stylish and the raw materials work perfectly with the feel in our house. Another fav is the Clipper Black Wood Floor Lamp with XL Mink Rolla Shade. We were lucky enough to be gifted this item by Iconic Lights after the shoot with them. It adds a touch of formality to our otherwise light and airy bedroom and the light it casts is so cosy. Last but not least, the Hock Black and Antique Brass Adjustable Floor Lamp. Perfectly simple, great quality and totally affordable.
